Physiotherapy: Enhancing Recovery and Improve Breathing for Pectus Patients

Welcome to Our Physiotherapy Program

At Dr. Pectus, we recognize the importance of comprehensive care for individuals undergoing pectus correction. Our Chest Physiotherapy Program is specifically designed to support your recovery process by optimizing respiratory function and promoting overall well-being. Our highly skilled physiotherapists are dedicated to providing personalized chest physiotherapy services tailored to meet the unique needs of pectus patients.

The most common condition accompanying chest deformities is the presence of humpback and other posture disorders in patients. Even if pectus deformities are corrected, most of these posture disorders in the patient do not improve. In addition, because pectus can cause intrathoracic compression and impair diaphragm functions, patients often have problems with their respiratory functions and anterior chest wall flexibility.

Among the posture disorders, almost all of the patients present with the heads of the shoulders facing forward (hooked shoulder), the opening of the shoulder blades (wing scapula) and humpback. It causes an insecure and bad posture, and together with pectus deformity, which has bad psychological effects on patients, this posture disorder also causes. In addition, 25% of the patients have right or left curvature of the spine, namely "scoliosis." Scoliosis is a condition that must be treated, like the hump, which we call kyphosis.

The most common and effective physiotherapy method in the world on the spine and these posture disorders is "Schroth" physiotherapy. Necessary equipment for Schroth physiotherapy, which can be applied with German origin "ISST" and Spanish origin "BSPTS" schools, is available in our clinic.

Our physiotherapists are both BSPTS and ISST trained and provide the advantages of both schools to our patients. We also apply chest and respiratory physiotherapy to provide flexibility of the anterior chest wall, to help treat pectus with maneuvers such as the Valsalva maneuver for the treatment of pectus excavatum, and to restore impaired diaphragm and respiratory functions caused by pectus deformity. Since our patient potential consists of pectus patients all the time, our physiotherapists are very experienced in this field, and we can get great results.

Understanding Physiotherapy for Pectus Patients

Improving Respiratory Function

Pectus conditions can affect lung capacity and compromise breathing mechanics. Chest physiotherapy helps improve lung ventilation and clearance of mucus, allowing for easier and more efficient breathing.

Promoting Optimal Recovery

After pectus correction surgery, the chest muscles and tissues undergo a healing process. Chest physiotherapy techniques help reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and enhance tissue flexibility, facilitating a smoother recovery.

Enhancing Chest Wall Mobility

Pectus conditions can restrict the movement of the chest wall. Through specialized exercises and mobilization techniques, chest physiotherapy helps restore and maximize the mobility of the chest, promoting better posture and overall comfort.

Our skilled physiotherapists will conduct a thorough assessment of your respiratory health, chest wall mobility, and any specific concerns you may have. This evaluation allows us to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.

We provide guidance on proper breathing techniques, diaphragmatic breathing, and deep breathing exercises to enhance lung capacity, improve oxygenation, and optimize respiratory function.

Pectus conditions can lead to increased mucus production and impaired clearance. We employ specialized techniques such as chest percussion, vibration, and postural drainage to help loosen and remove mucus from the airways, reducing the risk of respiratory infections.

Our physiotherapists utilize gentle mobilization techniques to improve the mobility and flexibility of the chest wall. This helps alleviate discomfort, promote better posture, and enhance overall chest wall function.
